The Reopening of places of Worship – government guidelines

This morning the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has issued:

COVID-19: guidance for the safe use of places of worship during the pandemic

This is a comprehensive document. The whole needs to be read carefully before allowing any opening for individual prayer, which is now permitted (date was changed by Government yesterday) from tomorrow, Saturday.

A PDF copy of the Government document, at the time of writing is available here.

Note that guidelines are still being developed, and may well be updated before the government finally sanctions the reopening of places of worship for anything other than individual prayer.  What this publication does do is offer an insight into the depth and scope of preparations which all places of worship need to have in mind and begin to address.

For examples of risk assessments for churches, a few different denominations have produced a template which can be adapted to individual churches:

The Church of England risk assessment template can be found here. For more details and helpful guidance visit the Church of England website.

The Methodist Church risk assessment can be found here.
