We are delighted to announce that Dr Ian Shaw has accepted an invitation to fill the new role of full-time Chief Executive Officer of the OPAL Trust. He will succeed Geoff Ruston, the current Secretary of OPAL, as from 1st May 2020 and will bring a wide range of experience in Christian leadership to the position.
After 10 years in pastoral ministry, Ian moved into leadership roles in theological education lecturing at International Christian College, Glasgow, working as UK Director with the Langham Scholars Programme and most recently as Provost of Union School of Theology in S Wales. He has wide knowledge of the need for quality evangelical literature in the churches and Bible Colleges in the Majority World where he has travelled extensively. Ian has also written widely, having so far published eight books. He is married to Christine, who is a teacher, and they have four grown up children and two grandchildren. They have been members of Strathaven Evangelical Church in Scotland for over 20 years, where Ian has previously served as an elder.
As CEO, Ian will bring strategic vision and leadership to all the different national and international aspects of OPAL’s work. On accepting this appointment Ian commented – “I am honoured to have been asked to take on the role of the CEO of OPAL Trust. As the churches in the Majority World continue to enjoy rapid growth, the needs for church leaders, Bible college students, and preachers to have Bibles in their mother-tongue, and good evangelical books to study, is greater than ever. As the truth is proclaimed faithfully, believers need to be built up in their faith based on firm foundations, so that they can resist false teaching and unhelpful emphases. It will be a privilege to use my experience in Christian leadership, theological education, writing and publishing to further develop the ministry which has been built up over the past 15 years.”
Dr Ian Burness, chairman of the OPAL board says “We have been greatly encouraged as we have engaged with Ian Shaw over the past year and have recognized the range of skills and abilities he will bring to OPAL Trust. His wide experience of the majority world and passion to resource leaders, preachers and indigenous Christians with sound Bible based materials will provide a firm foundation for OPAL to continue to expand its ministry around the world.”
A commissioning service for Dr Shaw followed by refreshments will be held on Saturday 2nd May at 4.30pm in Strathaven Evangelical Church, 10 Lethame Road, Strathaven ML10 6AD. All are welcome.
