It was disappointing at Abbey Church, Gloucester when our mums and toddler group ‘Abbey Tots’ wasn’t able to run due to lockdown restrictions as we had been encouraged to see God at work in the lives and families of some of those attending. But in thinking about what we could still do to maintain those existing relationships we also saw an opportunity to offer an activity for those with little babies who would be able to sit socially-distanced. So ‘Abbey Baby Club’ (ABC) was born! As we know that being at home with a small baby can be hard going, especially during lockdown, and baby groups are a life-line. We wanted to provide somewhere for mums to come and meet others in the same situation.
During the session we sing songs to them including nursery rhymes as well as Christian songs like ‘Jesus love is very wonderful’, we also tell a story from the Bible and have time for chat over a hot drink and a biscuit. We are able to share our experiences of motherhood with them and as a group support the mums that are there.
Our ultimate aim is to share the gospel with these mothers and see them and their families come to Christ. We are endeavouring to build relationships in order to share our faith with them.
The group started in October 2020 with babies who were only a few weeks old, these babies are now crawling and are ready to move on to Abbey Tots which has just restarted. We will now run the two groups back-to-back as we have a list of new mums waiting to join the baby club.
The mums who have come have been very appreciative of the group and enjoy coming. One of them said recently “I just love ABC, thank you so much”. And she has expressed an interest in joining the next Christianity Explored course. We are thankful to God for them and we pray that whole families will come to know Jesus for themselves.
